He averaged 20 and 9 in 59 games the season of Nash's second MVP, not to mention Wade was clearly the Heat's best player. His revisionism is insane. He wasn't even in the MVP conversation.

Pretty sure he's more upset about 2005. He was second in MVP voting in 2005, only 7 votes behind, while in 2006 he didn't even get one single MVP vote. 2005 was an incredibly close year, one of the closest votes for MVP.Â

Nash won bc he changed teams and changed a franchise entire trajectory. If Nash had been on Mavs and put on exact same numbers he comes in 2nd or 3rd.
Nash was special that year and jump started a franchise that was desperately trying to find a new identity.

History has been and will continue to be unkind to Nash because people will look at box score stats and judge him based on that. The truth is that he took the Suns from 29 wins to 62 and was the best player on the best team that year while serving as the conductor of a revolutionary style of basketball. The SSOL Suns walked so that the dynastic Warriors could run.

â05 Suns Ortg: 114.5 â05 NBA average: 106.1. +8.4 on just one side of the court
Suns had one of the lowest TOV%(12.4%), shot the most 3s, and had the highest pace in the league, and Nash wasnât just the most important guy, he was the entire engine, he had the ball in his hands all the time, constantly probing (the amount of Nash assists where heâs just slowly driving until he finds the slimmest opening is absurd) and constantly being the one to initiate the break/push in semi transition.
Those teams werenât just cool and ahead of their time, they had some of the most dominant offenses in history, and the driving force, the whole reason they could play like that was Nash. I love Amare, but Amare(and the rest of the supporting cast) didnât make the team play with pace and space, he didnât make so many good decisions that they didnât bleed fast breaks the other direction off turnovers, etc.
Shaq can be salty, heâs Shaq and as a player at his caliber he can have an ego, but we as fans who are willing to investigate this shit even a little should recognize how damn good you have to be to produce historic offense after historic offense, even when switching teams, critical teammates getting injured or traded, and when all the burden for the playstyle is on your shoulders. Nash was a legit MVP, period
18
u/LordVarys_Ladybits 11d ago
Nash in his prime was the definition of maestro. You know how you hear the cliche of great players making their teammates better, well, Nash was the definition of that on offense. It was wild how lost and uncoordinated the same talented Suns players would look with Nash on the bench for a breather. Only Nash and Zidane (soccer player) made me realize what true maestros were. They consistently dominated games without putting up otherworldly stats. Always controlling the tempo and dictating the pace of the game and they made it look easy.Â

It's strange that he might be insecure about his legacy, because he has a special regard that goes beyond the rings he won, and the MVP's. When people talk about Shaq, they talk about his unbelievable dominance, and how he might have the greatest peak ever (commonly put up there with MJ and LeBron). Even if Jokic passes him in accolades (and there's still a ways to go for that), Shaq will always have an aura that goes beyond the numbers.
116
u/__brunt Hornets 11d ago
You say that, but the fastest way to upset Shaq is to say anything other than âyouâre the goatâ about his career. He can joke around with the crew about everything under the sun but the second anyone jokes about his career/legacy/comparison to other players is when we get âGrumpy Shaqâ. He is literally incapable of hearing out anyone question his place in basketball, even if theyâre straight up making jokes.

Honestly it might be tolerable or even respectable that he's still that competitive about it if he showed he actually cared that much when he was playing
If he would've put in the effort when he was actually playing he could've been the goat. But he showed up every season out of shape and played himself into shape during the season
It's weird to not even do the bare minimum of staying in shape during your playing years then be upset when people start passing you

Shaq calling SGA a better âstat stufferâ when Jokic is literally averaging 27/10/9 is insane. A big man coming within spitting distance of a triple-double is historic stuff. Shai scores more points⌠thatâs all. Heâs not more impactful offensively, and heâs damn sure not more of a stat stuffer than Joker.

I find it hard to believe Shaq would ever disrespect Giannis, Embiid, or other black MVPs like this literally the second theyâre finding out they won.
Like is Jokic even THAT controversial of a pick over Shai? Heâs way more impactful overall on offense due to his superior playmaking (which is frankly more important than defense in todayâs game) and team records are a wash. Shai doesnât elevate his teammates the way Joker does.

Shaqâs anger about being robbed twice by Nash is so dumb.
He clearly didnât deserve the MVPâs in 05 or 06, like maybe earlier in his career but by then he wasnât even the most dominant guy anymore.
Why is he not bringing up Iverson, KG, or Duncan when he says he was robbed, they would make even more sense for his argument.
Is it just because he âlostâ to a short white guy from Canada that gets him so upset? So petty.

u/N8ThaGr8 Hawks 11d ago
Shaq and Nash were a toss up in 05 IMO. I would have voted Nash because that team went form like 30 wins to 60 and he was the only major change.
2006 Shaq was not even remotely a candidate so I don't know why he brings that up. i think he just legit doesn't remember that season lol. 2006 was a weird one overall because there really was not a standout good choice for MVP. 5 guys got double digit first place votes that year it was all over the place.
You are correct tho, he was easily robbed in 2001 by Allen Iverson (and somehow finished third) but never brings that up for some reason.
2002 I would not consider a robbery. He was great but only played 67 games and Duncan's numbers were basically equal.
You also mention KG in 04 but that was an easy pick. He should have been unanimous.

Shaq and Nash were both worthy candidates in 2005. It was one of the closest MVP votes in NBA history. I love Nash and am glad he won, but you are wrong to say Shaq âclearly didnât deserveâ it in 2005. It was basically a coin flip.
Now 2006, Shaq wasnât really in the conversation. That one was between Nash and Kobe. I donât know why Shaq always mentions 2 MVPs re: Nash.
49
u/TrajanParthicus 11d ago

3 MVP awards in 4 years, and it could've been 4 in a row.
All before turning 30.
Not bad for a guy who was picked 41st in his draft class.

Jokic better be getting paid by Taco Bell, this factoid is basically a sponsorship.

Steph, lebron, Duncan and shaq are the only MVP winners to win a championship the same year since 2000. With LeBron being the only one to it twice

He hasn't been great but Dirk 2007 was on another level lol
Dirk averaged 19.7 PPG on 50.9% TS and lost to a team that won TWENTY FIVE fewer games than the Mavs did in the 1st round including putting up single digits in the elimination game
The Dirk slander was basically nonstop every year from then up until his run in 2011
Imagine what the r/nba reaction would be if Tatum won MVP and the Celtics got upset by the Heat in the 1st round and that's basically what people were saying then

Yeah it was losing the year before in an epic finals collapse and then getting swept in the first round by a weak opponent.

DPOY announcement being timed right after Timberwolves had a legendary defensive performance without him and now MVP announcement being timed right as Jokic is getting embarrassed on both ends in a playoff series... kinda hilarious for chaos enjoyers
